Blackjack Holdem Strategy There are a lot of things worth considering when playing poker. This pages concentrates on technique and tells. Tells Quite simply something thats tells your opponent information that you dont want them to know. Assuming you are playing online poker is still very possible to give away little tells. Do you often take a long time to call but call quick on an ace? Do you quickly hit stand every time you are bust? Try to wait the same amount of time between decisions, say 10 seconds to reveal nothing If you think you can do it well enough consider giving out fake tells
Calling quickly tends to suggest a player as a weak hand as he in intentionally sending out the signal I have a strong hand as to disuade you from bettting. Some pro's deliberately do this to trick you. Your Standing with the Players Have you been continuously folding? Maybe this would be a good time to bluff. Have players started to cotton on to you only ever calling your aces? Maybe you start bluff a little on 20 to stop a share of the pot. Exploit your image if possible to your advantage Standing on what looks like a good hand may induce your opponents to take too many cards and bust, chasing after your "better hand"
The Amount of Players Left In a tournament game with only one opponent left it is worth considering playing more hands and bluff more, especially if you are up against a conservative player. Often the way a player plays their hand will change as the number of players drops, usually tending to become more aggressive, especially if they are the chip leader Sometimes is is mathematically better to call with a worse hand than fold it if you are really short stacked
Bluffing A complex affair but if you are comfortable and good at it it can be very profitable in the long-term Pot odds can be used in bluffing, if you think a player will fold 50% of the time on a bet of 20% the pot then this bluff will make you long term profit and is worth trying Semi-bluffs can be a useful tool. When you are certain or close to certain a player has the same hand as you a large bet could be a way of stopping the pot being shared
A Simple Technique for Deceiving Players We noticed before that if you are taking notes on a player and you start to see a pattern forming like:
R-xxxx C-xxxxxxxxxxxx F-xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
then this player is likely straight down the line i.e. raises their aces, calls their tens and folds anything else. It might be worth emulating this pattern with a different strategy if you're up against stronger players. Raise on 1 in 4 of your tens and call the rest of your tens and aces. Fold everything else. This sends out the message that you only raise on an ace.
In the event you hit an ace on the raise of your ten you can likely play it strong if players have been taking note. They may assume you have hit two aces and are trying to bluff the pot.
Hitting a ten on your ace is also very good. Better players will take your hand for a 20 and not 21 since they are under the impression you're calling only with 10's and raise your aces. This allows you to "bluff" a player at the very end who has 20, making him make the wrong call to your 21.
Beware of using this technique after you've been called a few times to the finish as better players will notice, even if initially they just put it down to you having a few bad hands in a row.
Other methods include randomly raising on lower cards, especially when there are few players left. You can bluff if you hit 10 or ace and you can also legitimately make a good hand too. |
